Read and comment on the Unity08 Draft Rules
Why I joined Unity08:
My cat, Purly, loves to read and is a pretty astute observer of current affairs. Recently,
she related the following.
Said Purly, "Did you know that, in 1883, when William Tecumseh Sherman, formerly a famous
or infamous (depending on individual bias) general in the Civil War, was proposed as a Republican
Party candidate for the presidency in 1884, he said, "If drafted, I will not run. If nominated, I
will not accept. If elected, I will not serve."
"I vaguely recall something about that," I answered.
"Well...his comment came to be known, in political circles, as a Shermanesque Statement."
"Uh huh," I responded.
She went on. "Over the years, equivocal politicians have been challenged to issue a
similar statement. All declined, except Mo Udall, a Democrat from Arizona. In 1983, Udall,
seriousely considered a genuinely meritorious man of presidential timber, said, "If nominated,
I shall run to Mexico. If elected, I shall fight extradition."
"That's pretty funny," I said.
"Ya know what?" she asked.
"No, I don't know what," I replied, "but I'm sure you'll tell me."
"I think," she said, "that politics has become so rank and rotten a cesspool that all
office seekers, if drafted, should be forced to run for city limits. And...if nominated,
should be expelled from society. And, if elected, should be immediately arrested...and jailed...
in the best interests of the people."
"Ya know what else?" she posed.
"I've no idea," I answered.
"Unity08 is dedicated to amending this traditionally sorry state of affairs. I think we
should enrol in so commendable and worthwhile an endeavor...while we still have a chance to
make a difference."
