Cultural Diversity vs Multiculturalism vs USA citizen (america no longer a melting pot...)

posted by germanicus on July 20, 2024 - 5:23am

America is no longer the "melting-pot"...................

What does it mean to be a USA citizen ?
~ does giving away USA citizenship demonstrate its value; not only to us but to those receiving it ?

~ our place in the sun...
~ I'm thinking ~ cultural diversity, (aka - social capital - ie...skin color, language, faith...etc...) serves to divide "citizenship" in the USA.

There are many important issues that divide us...e.g...race, income (aka ~ opportunity), language, faith, intellect, respect, sacrifice etc...
(aka ~ our "social capital" ~ our place(s) in the sun.)
the 1st, 2nd & 3rd rules of social capital being ~ color of skin, language & religion.
undoubtably, the very reasons for all the race based organizations........we have today.

These divisive issues are not inconsequential to the basic elements of self (& family) survival....and at times, even divide the family.
(curious, it seems the very thing that attracts immigration; is what some immigrants (& some citizens) want to change...)

I used to think I was an American. However, due mostly to the push for "cultural diversity";
~ race, income, politics, religion, language ~ is/are divisive enough.....(aka ~ our "social capital" ~ our place(s) in the sun.)
I find myself trying to limit (rather than broaden) my horizons in order to fit in; how people define themselves as say:
native-american, mexican-american, african-american, arab-american etc... ~ vs
~ "american"......the presumed common (idealogical & geographical) denominator(s), here in the USA.
I'm beginning to think that our common idealogical goals, ain't so common anymore. heck, i don't even know what it is to be "american" anymore.
Perhaps the only thing(s) common is/are ~ geography, secular ~ law(s) of the land, (hopefully) co-existence & opportunity (hope for a future).

"Multiculturalism" has its supporters and critics alike.
~ Its supporters often see it as a self-evident entitlement of cultural groups, as a form of civil rights grounded in equality of cultures. They often assume it will lead to interculturalism (circa: 2nd or 3rd generation) - beneficial cultural exchanges, where cultures learn about each other's literature, art and philosophy (high culture), and influence each other's music, fashion and cuisine.
~ Its opponents often see it as something which has been imposed on them without their consent. Some in the West view multiculturalism as an assault upon the foundations of Western civilization. (e.g... theocracies vs democracies)
~ Opponents of multiculturalism see it as inherently divisive and fear it will lead to cultural ghettos, undermining national unity. In Europe especially, opponents see multiculturalism as a direct assault on the national identity, and on the nation itself, and sometimes as the critical mass to Islamise (islamic fundamentalism-theocracy) Europe.
similar of the critical mass to hispanize, latinize, mexicanize the USA.....

I agree. "Diversity" in it`s very meaning is to DIVIDE, not unite. I am really sick of this word, and it being constantly used to further a specific agenda. After all, who could possibly be against "diversity"?

yes,

I believe different cultures is a plus to the United States but some try to use it to get special privledges and all to often they succeed. If one is to speak out against these special interest then they are labeled a Bigot,Homophobic,Racist.I am against illegal immigration so I am a bigot.I teach my kids that marriage is when a man and a woman are joined together so I am homophobic.I disagree when someone and anyone gets to go to college or get a job when they are not as qualified as another person this belief qualifies me to be a racist. The majority of Americans see this and quite frankly are fed up with it.I was not around during slavery and also missed the civil rights movement due to my age.Americans did repent of both these evils and alot of blood was spilled from many different races.Good won over evil.Lets not forget the past but we need to look to the future. There are always going to be racist and they come in all varieties.Trust me these are the people that lose in the end.Are goal should be to not let them dictate policy or pollute the rule of law.Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness should be are common goals. To pass special laws for special groups just so they can obtain there happiness is not the American way.

I do blame alot of media for racial seperation.

You are not a bigot or a racist. I spent 4 yrs in the military and made close friends from every color and race. I am planning my soon to be bi- racial marriage and will probably have half black half white children.
I want myself and my children to be treated equally and be accepted on thier merritt not by thier color.
My fiance is black and has put herself through law school on her grades and has done it without the need for any form of affirmative action or complaining of race and I'm more proud of her than she is. LOL
Alot of white Americans have no problem and wish for minorities to be treated equally but we don't want to lose jobs, collage money, etc. because of our color.

We have only been a country for 200 years.....yet people from every corner of this planet want to come here......legally or illegally.........That must mean we have been doing something right....

That must mean that the country they came from must not be doing that great....

So...

If people are coming here because THEY think WE are doing some right......and they come from places that aren't doing that great.......MAYBE WE SHOULD STOP LISTENING TO THEIR DEMANDS ON HOW TO RUN OUR COUNTRY........

MAYBE WE WERE DOING JUST FINE BEFORE THIS ETHNIC GROUP OR THAT IMMIGRANT CAME ALONG.....AND MAYBE WE WILL BE DOING JUST FINE WITHOUT THEM.....

MAYBE ITS TIME WE TOOK A HARD LOOK AT W H O WE LET IN TO THIS COUNTRY.... DO WE REALLY NEED ANYMORE SICK, LAME, LAZY, OR DISCONTENT???....SEEMS LIKE WE HAVE PLENTY OF THAT TO GO AROUND ALREADY

MAYBE THEY SHOULD ASSIMILATE INTO OUR SOCIETY....MAYBE WE SHOULD BE EXPECTING THEM TO BECOME AMERICANS OR GO HOME....

MAYBE WE SHOULD BE PROTECTING OUR WAY OF LIFE FOR ALL OF THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO STILL WANT TO COME HERE FROM EVERY TOM, DICK AND ILLEGAL ALIEN WHO WANTS TO WAVE THEIR FLAG IN PROTEST IN OUR DAMN COUNTRY.........

MAYBE WE SHOULD QUIT WORRYING ABOUT POLITICALLY CORRECT AND START WORRYING ABOUT J U S T B E I N G CORRECT.

200 yrs is not a long time people..... countries and governments have come and gone in less time than that......

What is correct? This is a question that has been asked and answered throughout our history, and with different results. Most immigrants don't ask for us to change our morals, or our values, but ask us only to accept theirs. It is most often our own laziness (not searching out the truth, or even taking interest in other cultures) that creates tension, especially when it comes to religious values. Although "right" has been changed drastically in our few centuries, there has been a trend that we can realize and support as possibly the "right" trend to follow, and that is a trend of increased acceptance and freedom. It doesn't just benefit immigrants, it also benefits those struggling to accept them. And, it helps those who are like me, uncountable generations into American "assimilation" but with a mind, opinions, and convictions of my own that are not commonly shared with the majority.

These Illegal Immigrants do not want "equal opportunity", they want "equal OUTCOMES". They want to take without putting in. They want to get without giving. The Federal Government does nothing but pander to them, after all, they will vote for the party that GIVES them the most! When States make laws to control or eradicate illegals, the Courts (guided by the ACLU) jump in and say "Oh, NO-NO, you cannot single out these illegals!"

We need a President who will CLOSE THE SOUTHERN BORDER, and EXPELL ALL ILLEGALS! I would also like to see our elected Law Enforcement officers actually do their job, and stop this ridiculous "safe-haven" non-sense. Deportation should only be a phone call away.

RON PAUL will put this country back on track.

Being an American Citizen means - you have the right and responsibility to "Defend and Protect Our Constitution from All Enemies, Foreign AND DOMESTIC" .. giving it away speaks to the ignorance & Character of the people giving it away - not to the value of the Citizenship !!

I'm with Teddy Roosevelt:
"Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country."
“We can have no "50-50" allegiance in this country. Either a man is an American and nothing else, or he is not an American at all.”

I grew up being taught about the "melting pot" - I think we have lost sight of that.
