Christianity in Politics

posted by KrisW on February 11, 2024 - 7:03pm

With the "Church and State" topic closed for discusion for some reason, I feel it is necessary to start another topic on this issue.

Elsehwere I expressed my discontent with the ways both sides political spectrum have usurped Christianity for it's own political purposes. Basically, the Republicans drive it toward legalism, while the next emerging movement on the Left drives it toward antinominism.

I've also have previously expressed my concerns about being branded a "homophobe" for stating homosexuality is a sin.

Then is a definte movement in America to brand all Christians as "intolerant" and ACLU has made MILLIONS of dollars attempting removing any form of Christian expression from the public square.

One of my major concerns with the candidate selcted by Unity08 is that, whomever it is, their values system is consistent with Judeo-Christian values, and that they ensure these attacks on Christianity in America will stop.

So I guess off the top that will exclude John Edwards who feels its OK to have bloggers who call Catholics M*****F***er's.

Anyone else wants to comment, feel free.

Americans are not attacking god. They are trying to keep Christianity from ruining the republic.

--Think also of the comfort and rights of others

"No relegious Test shall ever ber required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
--Article VI, U.S. Constitution.

This suggested plank violates the spirit of the Constitution's separation of church and state. If one understands that well over 90% of our legislators are Christian, it is difficult to buy into the idea that Christians are being oppressed. I don't care how many evangelists with TV shows tell us this. How seriously should we take a plank that suggests this overwhelmingly Christian populated country is attempting to brand Christians as intolerant? It is a immature attempt to establish a Christian state.

...or motion made to suggest KrisW is suggesting that any sort of religious test be adopted by Unity08. All I see in this heading post is someone opining on a subject he feels strongly about.

However, should such a motion be made, I, too, would not support such a motion.

I do not think that the "christian values" plank is acceptable. I think that human values, you know, the basics, are what we need. With the above stated Christian statistic, we have a 90% chance of our candidate being Christian. And while many christians have great values, I would assume that with the 90% figure, you would have to also agree that 90% of our homicidal maniacs and serial killers were probably raised as and/or practicing Christians. The BTK Killer from a few years back comes to mind. I think if we concentrate on having a good person nominated, not a good Christian or a good Jew or a good any other label, we can work on getting past this type of limitation.

I agree as well. Christianity is a joke and should be done away with. They have been spreading hatred for a thousand years. I believe people should be free to do whatever the feel is ok to them. If you want to do something Im only pregudice and discriminating against your feelings if I dont agree.Im sure most of the bad people in this country are that way because of Christianity somehow.

and think that you missed my point. Wanting a candidate with a particular label will only limit our choices. Good, respectable morals and values are not the sole property of Christians. I am a practicing Catholic, and am by no means "Christian Bashing", I'm just saying that if the country is 90% Christian, you can expect Christians to be 90% of many statistics. I am by no means advocating "feel good anarchy", which I believe is what many in the P.C. realm would have to avoid offending anyone.

Two weeks have now passed since Bob Roth announced U08 would have candidates/issues polls and no response or update from the leadership. Something is rotten in Denmark! The leadership needs to disband U08 or step forward and lead.

The Revolution is not being televised but it is being youtubed!
Join the Ron Paul Revolution to take our country back, it is apparently the only organization really trying to do so!

about this earlier this morning on the DC group. I will post his reply for you as soon as I get it. It was my understanding that, because of server limitations (or something like that, I'm kind of computer illiterate), they could only send 4,000 out at a time, once every couple of hours or so. With this limitation and our ranks around 100,000 it should have only taken 25 batches.

agreed. you are right on point autobob.

it was nice to see that even though i have vehemently disagreed with autobob & merlinhaggard on some issues & they disagreed with me as well, it was nice that the three of us all agree on this issue and likely on others as well. that in part is what unity 08' is about in my opinion.

What issue specifically Scandal. That Christians should be eradicated?.

You aren't funny.

I was obviously being sarcastic.

Its amazing how a person can overlook so much good and only see bad. I have no time for such a person. Good luck.

no religion should be eradicated. not even those of a faith that disagrees with my faith.

I will not go on a bender about how I think this or that about Christianity , however I do not beleive that just because someone goes to church (any church) does not mean they are a moral person. How many times has this been shown, a pasture having an affair, a priest molesting a child, on & on. Just because someone is not a "religious" person does not mean they are not a moral person. It just means your views will differ with said person, but thats not a bad thing. I do not think it is acceptable to slander any religion that someone choses, it is a personal choice. However, your personal choice should not be pushed or passed on to other people. If someone finds "God" great, but I don't need to know about it. I think Christians get allot of flak solely because they are the ONLY religion that feels the need to try and convert everyone. At the end of the day we are all human, we all bleed, we all feel pain and we all want to be treated justly. At the end of the day we all want to provide for our families, protect our families and give our kids a better life than we had. I saw we start with this common ground, lets not quiver over how goes to church more or who has more faith.
Lets also assume and accept that we will disagree on allot of topics, gays, lesbians, guns, alcohol, sex, etc. But this is not a bad thing, lets not take it personally, our differences is what makes us great. Lets get back to the philosophy that "I my with every fiber of my body disagree with what you say, however, I will fight to death (if needed) to ensure that you can say it," this is the philosophy that adhere to. There are some many politicians, teachers, preachers, etc that say things that are just so horrible (IMO) but, I will never allow that voice to be silenced, and neither should you. We need to encoure health debate, not stifle it.

"First that came for the catholics, but I'm not catholic so I didn't say anything. Then they came for the JEWs, but I'm not Jewish, so I didn't say anything. Then they came for me and they was no one left to say anything"

You see Jeff, you are being too factual. The people on this thread who would like us to believe that Christians are being persecuted by the state that is run by well over 90% Christian legislators cannot deal with those facts. It gets in the way of their sensationalism. You are not being fair, Jeff. Ease off on the facts and evidence. Productive discussions require hyperbole only. Just tune into the score or more daily Christian broadcasts. Listen to the late-night TV evangelist drone--they'll straighten you out. It is obvious that the Christian population of this country is oppressed; they repeat it over and over again in the mega churches across the nationl.

--Think also of the comfort and rights of others

I believe extremists have no place in logical discussion. Be resonable or continue to be taken as a weirdo.

O, Merlin, you're such a cantankerous fella. We was just havin’ us some fun.

--Think also of the comfort and rights of others

I think it is important that our candidate be all-inclusive when it comes to the people of this country. By that, I mean that all faiths and points of view should be treated with respect, and common ground be found to base the ethical behavior of our government upon. I know this is possible, because all faiths follow the Golden Rule.

From Jefferson's biography:
"...an amendment was proposed by inserting the words, 'Jesus Christ...the holy author of our religion,' which was rejected 'By a great majority in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mohammedan, the Hindoo and the Infidel of every denomination.'"
