Cultural Survey sample plan Needs Work - the Coasts aren't good for this

Unity Team,

I'm sure you have a great research project underway, which will be of interest to a lot of people.

Still, If you are interested in Bipartisan, centrist, Middle American thought, you wont get enough of it in DC, NYC, or CA.

If your 3 cities were Chicago, Atlanta, and Denver your research results will be qualitatively and quantitatively different than your current sample.

All citizens and voters need to be heard, but if the research in any way reflects upon what you are trying to accomplish in Unity08, I think this may be a point of disconnect.

What we are attempting to measure is the experience of those that take part in the study, not their opinion. Any urban area is largely a collection of people from other parts of the country. Experience begins when you first encounter politics with your parents, grandparents, and friends... those experiences, due to the diversity of urban areas, will have taken place all over the country.

Plus, we know people in these areas that can grant us access to facilities. And, we have a good concentration of members there.

Okay, I'm sure you will get a broad diversity of experience and opinion in the big cities. They are filled with a good sample of locals and new arrivals.

The difference is that new arrivals in big cities are the ones who have packed up and moved from places where there is less opportunity. They are more mobile, maybe younger, perhaps more educated than their family that stayed behind.

I'm sure they care for their family members, but have more of an attitude that if they are put in a bad position, take action & change things for your self. Thats their experience.

To a certain extent centrists some day have to say, you conervatives and liberals better stop putting me in a bad position, or else.

I'm not expecting many NY or DC people to be able to get to that point without prompting.

Perhaps this project isn't headed in that direction, but it would be good if some future project was.

Again, I disagee. Measuring the experiences of a large number of Unity08 members/delegates online can give you a much better result than trying to herd a few hundred people into a room in three cities. As far as diversity goes, Unity08 membership itself already represents people from all walks of life, from every region of the country, and is directly related to the target group.

Coasts are not centrist areas, indeed they are not even centrally located.
