"Are you better off now than you were four years ago?" is a cliche in American politics. It refers to economic well-being, but what if it refers to security?
-Is the U.S. safer?
-Are Americans safer?
-What are the threats to safety?
-What are some solutions?
What do you think? And why?
But how would I know the actual answers? All that I do know is what little they choose to tell me and most of that I can dismiss as pure propoganda. Personaly I would feel a whole lot safer if all of our troops were home and I knew for a fact that the company wasnt out someplace in the world doing covert operations that stirred up more anti american sentiment ... but thats just me so ....
I want to say yes and no. On some things I believe we are safer but in other ways I believe we are not. One thing is that we always go on the air and tell the world about things. This I bleieve makes us vunerable.
Mike
There is no Right Answer. Like most questions there's only your perception.
We are a nation of smart, hardworking people who have been convinced we need to be lead by the nose. We need to stop that. Nobody has all the answers. Nobody even has all the questions. By working together we can get closer to something that might be truth -- and perhaps keep the herd from stampeding off the cliff.
In what ways do you think we're safer, michalebrown? In what ways not?
I'm not sure *I* believe most of what we broadcast, so I'm not sure how that makes us all that vulnerable, but can you elaborate on this?
It seems rather cear that neither Blue or Red will do anything except keep terrorism as a high priority. Without agreeing or diagreeing, It does seem that our leaders have not really asked the right questions regarding terror. instead they sell us fears and make us mortgage our children's future for their agendas.
In my State of MAryland, we have had home invasions by gunpoint. Virginia had a 18 year old male fatally ambush a police station. We find issues like this all over our country every other day. Clearly we have disenfranchised. Clearly our own experiment on Democracy is not finished.
Improving what we have may be the best example for the rest of the world. But instead we choose war with a nation we have no quarrel with and whose culture we do not understand.
Has one Nation Under God now speak but through a god that lacks compassion? How do we move forward if only fear can guide us and move us? We are no longer such a young Country. When do we evolve?
After the fall of Tora Bora, there were perhaps 100-200 members of AlQaida, with little direct experience in terror operations. Now there are tens of thousands of AlQaida members in Iraq, with real world experience in weapons, explosives, recruitment. We don't know who they are and cannot easily prevent them from coming to America. These fighters are currently spreading throughout the middle east and the world.
Yes, I am better off today than I was 4 years ago. I will just take these questions as the come.
-Is the U.S. safer? Yes, we have now created an infrastructure to deal with the issue that we did not have pre 9/11.
-Are Americans safer? Yes, as long as we continue to fight the war, we will loose no more lives to foreign or domestic terrorism.
-Is the world safer? Yes, as long as we continue to fight the war there will be no more foreign terrorism, domestic terrorism or terrorist states to deal with.
-What are the threats to safety? The threat to our safety is that in 50 to 100 years those terrorist and their sponsoring states will over run this country. Can you speak Chinese?
-What are some solutions? Continue to fight. No terrorist, tyrant or dictator has ever been subdued by warm and fuzzy talk.
If you think we lost too many unnecessary lives in Viet Nam, what about WWII? If we had crushed the Germans in WWI and continued protected the Chinese for the Japanese there would have been no WWII. If Truman had listened to Patton then the Soviet Union under Stalin would not have murdered 40 million people. Then we would have gone into China and prevented Mao and his thugs from murdering 20 million people. Ah, by continuing the war on upstart dictators in Russia and Japan after WWI there would have been no Viet Nam because there would have been no USSR or Communist China.
If you don’t believe in the war on terrorism, then think about this. Some 100milloin people were murder in the 20th century because we were afraid of war.
War has always been and always will be the answer. War saves lives.
I suggest we expanded to Africa and triple the defense budget. The two-bit-thugs in Africa are murdering about 400,000 people a year.
Who’s with me?
All things are best done in moderation, though I'd agree to going farther in the direction you're suggesting. The problem, as defined by extraction from von Clausewitz, is that in order to successfully wage total war you have to have a total commitment on the part of the civilian infrastructure that supports it. That was relatively easy to accomplish in the monarchies and empires of post-Rennaissance Europe (as well as the more rigid societies of the Middle-East and Asia) but nearly impossible in the America of today. Every time we stick our military dick out, someone chops it short through the usual round of protests and high profile whiners.
The only way to change that lies in changing the mass of opinion in the American populace. My own feeling is that the sissyfication of American will has happened in our school system. When the college-deferrment crowd from the Vietnam era looked for ways to avoid putting their own ass into danger, they became over-educated; by which I mean they got far more credits and degrees than they actually needed to accomplish their chosen jobs in their chosen fields. Upon graduating, and the end of the war, they had to come up with justification for all that extra education. Hence our current over-emphasis on educational achievement for job-searchers (as opposed to practical work-experience in the field). Now these people are nearing retirement age and have shaped the entire educational system into their anti-war image; they have embedded themselves into the system, moved up the chain of authority and re-written the curriculae wherever they are.
For us to change American attitude we must change American education. That is something that cannot happen overnight, and will entail a massive debate that will not be won any time soon.
The terrorists have shown that they have far greater ability to change our attitudes than we do. I suspect that they will foolishly embark upon another attitude-changing operation as soon as we pull out of Iraq; another massive attack upon the American homeland, just to show us it can still be done. I would remind you of the xenophobic and isolationist attitude of the American people before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and suggest that it will be far easier to re-organize such institutions AFTER they have done something vile to us again. As cold-blooded as that may sound.
The bottom line is that Americans, on average, are too busy and apathetic to pull their heads out of their asses and have a good look around very often. Unfortunately enough, the quickest way to get our attention away from our eternal celebrity-watching and navel-gazing is to punish us with some dastsrdly attack or other. Most of us aren't interested in Empire-building, regarding it as evil even if we are left with no choice but to do so in order to survive. The question always seems to be "what did we do that caused these people to do this?" when sometimes it should really be "what dysfunctional part of their dysfunctional society causes them to hate us, and for what reason?". If it's something we can reasonably change, without doing violence to our own values, we may be better off changing and moving on. Yet that is not always the answer as our Liberals seem to think it is. In the case of Islamofascism/Salafism/Wahhabism and their ideological similars, there is only room for them or us ultimately. We either must become them, which should be even more repulsive to feminists/homosexuals/liberals of all other stripes/Jews/African Americans/Hollywood actors and producers than it is to me, or we must eliminate them and their belief systems. The longer it takes us to realize this fact, the harder it will be for us to win when we do.
We could save a lot of money, and stop making so many enemies, simply by minding our own business, and bringing our troops home from around the world.
The Soviet Union is no more. China is on the rise, but is not a military threat. If China is an economic threat, we will counter it better by cutting out a few hundred billion dollars a year we currently waste policing the world.
A handful of terrorists don't merit a half-trillion-dollar response. Just let people run their own countries for a change.
We tried that after WWI, and it brought us WWII with a vengeance. The problem here isn't that we're so all-fired eager to mind every one else's business; they want to tell us how to mind ours. Do you want some devout but ignorant goat-herd from Baluchistan telling you who to pray to, how often to do it and what your wife/mother/sister can wear in public? If you don't like it when people of Jerry Falwell's stripe try and insert the "under God" line back into the Pledge of Allegiance (where it always was until you pulled it out), I can guarantee it that you will not like an Islamic America.
Even without the CIA stirring up trouble, it would be impossible for Americans to do business anywhere in the world without butting up against this lunacy. In case you're forgetting, the "Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli" line in the Marine Corps Hymn is all about how that great Democrat, Thomas Jefferson, sent the Marines and Navy off to North Africa to deal with Algerian pirates. This was in 1802, when they'd seized American merchant vessels and then enslaved the crews. Prior to that, I'm not sure they'd even heard there was a new country called America.
Interestingly, once we'd administered a sound thrashing to them they left us alone for almost a century.
An old saying here is "clean your own porch before you sweep someone else's off".
We have the most corrupt gov't on the planet with the possible execption of Israel. Regime change must happen here first. The disregard of the "rule of law" by the past three administrations and the failure of the corrupt and or compromised Congress to enforce the "rule of law" has led the USA to the brink of ruin. Twenty years of treasonous trade and foreign policies now have us on the verge of poverty.
Like the illegal immigration problem most of our domestic problems would be non existent if the laws already on the books were enforced. Just two weeks ago 54 Senators voted not to enforce the immigration laws already on the books.
The White House has housed nothing but liars and thieves (and much worse) for nearly twenty years now. Our Constitution is in shreds as is the Bill of Rights. The power of the people and self government are but a shadow now. The Bush's, Clinton's and their cronies in the Laemstream Media, on Wall Street and in DC have grown fat at the expense of the everyday American citizen. Our young go off to die in wars that are based on lies while the liars who send our young off to die make sure their young don't have to do the same.
The good news is that the crimes of the Bush/Clinton crime family are finally starting to catch up with them. Cheney's days are numbered now and he will not survive until the next election. The ensuing mess will in all likelyhood bring down Jr. as well and shed the light on the complicity of the Clinton's in this grand scheme.
The question is "to what ends will they go to avoid justice?". The American people are generally slow to anger but nothing angers them more than being lied to and looking like fools when they finally figure out they have been lied to, stolen from and sold down the proverbial river. As the layers of this rotten onion start to be peeled away and the People and the honest, law abiding and patriotic citizens in our military and gov't too figure out what the score is big changes will take place.
We are definitely living the old Chinese curse of "may you live in intersting times".
No doubt the genie is out of the bottle biologically, chemically and by nuclear weapons.... The people ask government to defend a undefendable way of life... We ask religious peoples to accept our lack of morality into their societies... Abraham Lincoln would tell us to have a revolution and stop this new more modern form of worldwside slavery that brings us cheap trinkets from China... to defend our borders and use our overwhelming air power to provide freedom loving people with air support as they fight for freedom worldwide... implement "smart" technology on the ground in military conflict and remove our young folks from harms way.... http://www.appyp.com/fix_main.html
Greg Glover is absolutely 100% corect. Let's start mandatory government service for 2 years for every high school graduate ASAP. That could be a platform plank for us,
Greg, I thought I would reword your subject title. Ask the average German from WWI or WWII what they think of war. Ask a Korean what they think of war. Etc., etc. War might be YOUR answer, but it isn't MINE!
And Chicago Al, you're not going to use MY son for cannon fodder!!!
Daniel9: It sounds like chicagoAl might be on to something. Such a platform might not get a lot of votes but the riots it would cause would certainly get a lot of press coverage.
Terrorism is here to stay as the masses have no other way to revolt against most governments now in control by force. This fact combined with the weapons now at the disposal of international terrorists require all nations to build walls and tighten up the ports of entry. We can not longer pretend terrorism is a passing phase or that it is the result of something radical. Until today people could fight the morale fight for freedom, but because of the communications and weapons of today the people have no other way for forced overthrow against totalitarian regimes when diplomacy will not work.
Those governments that do not have democratic systems and supress the will of the people are the nations that should fear terrorism the most. Because it will be the working people experiencing 50% taxation, a police state and modernized slavery that will overthrow a nation... not a few radicals from outside the society, but the working class within the society must be feared the most.
When the students stuck their necks out in the square, stopping tanks and Communist China in it's tracks, demanding freedom... the United States set freedom back 200 years in China by not putting our foot down and stopping all trade with Communists China on the spot... instead we let the Communist Government round up and kill them all as we permitted trade to continue as we do today... As the communist destroy us with covert acts of terrorism and the rape and pillage of our economy... thanks Nixon...
We fund totalitarian governments with trade and military technology so that they may implement the police state. Nations which deny human rights and allow modern slavery within economics. Then we wonder why the people of those horrible nations feel they have no other choice but to strap a bomb around their waste and explode themselves. I think these "modern slaves" are sending a unified message people have been screaming since the beginning of time "FREEDOM!".... They may not know what their talking about but by God they are saying it loud and clear....
First, let me start by saying that we need to make it clear to our enemies that, our nations ability to engage in a heated internal debate does not mean that we will not unify and fight any aggressors. Our debate on whether we should have attacked Iraq has not, as far as I can tell, affected our nations overwhelming support of the operations in Afghanistan (remember them? the ones who harbored our attackers).
We are no more safe from a terrorist attack today than we were on Sept. 10, 2024. We may in fact be right around the corner from the most unsafe and unstable periods in our history. We need to remember that only 60 years ago the Palestinians thought they could, with their allies, fight Israel in traditional warfare. When that proved impossible they change strategy, rather than topple the government the Palestinians took aim at the will of the everyday Israeli. Soon buses, shopping centers and crowded amusement settings became potential targets. We are not far from that being a U.S. reality. Al queda will eventually abandon the "big bang" strategy and switch to hit-and-run suicide bombings. We continue to try to deal with them on their terms. Threatening an islamic fundamentalists with death is like telling a 17 year old American "If you point that weapon at me I'll be forced to give you 70 beautiful women and make you eternally famous."
We, as a country do more for third world nations than most other countries but we do a horrible PR job, and we could do more while spending less money. While I agree that we can not conquer dictators or terrorist with "warm fuzzy talk" we can win the minds of the people of the nations. We would have won a great deal of respect and influence in Iraq without nearly the hassle had we liberated them in '91.
What we need to defeat terrorism is for every U.S. citizen and U.S. based corporation to make a sacrifice for the cause. That's what it took during WWII and that's what it will take now. We continue to build and buy monstrous gas guzzling machines when the fundamentalists main source of income is oil. We will buy a shirt made in China to save $2 rather than buy a shirt made in the U.S.
Does anyone remember a little period in time called the Crusades?
The catholic church decided that the infidel muslims must either convert or be destroyed. Would we brand the catholic church as a terrorist organization today?
How about our own revolutionary war. Would our founding fathers be labeled terrorists today?
We are so righteous of a nation, if you do not beleive as we do - you are a terrorist.
There is no excusing the terrorists that purposely kill indiscriminately. However, with the current foreign policy of our government, we are breeding a whole new generation of terrorists.
Get your history right. The Crusades were called in response to a desperate call for help from the Byzantine Emperor, after Islam over-ran Christian territories including Jerusalem. Their purpose was to free the Holy Land from Muslim overlordship and return it to Christian rule. End of story. There was no "convert or die" nonsense and you failed to mention an overwhelming amount of context in your polemic rant. Including the fact that early Islam was far less tolerant of "the people of the Book" than they'd like to paint themselves, meaning that "convert or die" was much more a hallmark of early Muslim expansion than for the Christian response to it.
I'm not defending the inexcusable slaughter that took place when Jerusalem was recaptured by Baldwin of Flanders and the Christian army, nor any of the other atrocities committed by Christians during this period. It happens that that was usually, though not always, the way of the world back then. But Islam wasn't sending young kids around to people's doors like the Mormons do to try and convert people. Mohammed himself ordered the slaughter of entire tribes that resisted conversion and the procedure didn't change much over the next two hundred-odd years.
"Does anyone remember a little period in time called the Crusades? "
Yes, the Crusades followed on the heels of Mohamedan terrorism that spread Islam into the West at the point of a sword. The Crusades ended nearly 800 years ago. Will Islam ever put down Mohamed's sword?
It’s important to remember that the “Arab world Does Not Endorse Fanatics”: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-0606120213jun12,1,6622403.story?coll=chi-opinionfront-hed
If this discussion turns into religious banter, then we’re back at square one. The original questions are:
-Is the U.S. safer?
-Are Americans safer?
-Is the world safer?
-What are the threats to safety?
-What are some solutions?
We more or less ignored the threat of world terrorism for decades until it manifested itself in our own country. It will take a long time to track down and dismantle terrorist organizations and thier sources of support that have been building over that time. The US should take the lead in this effort since we have the technology, manpower, and resolve to see it thru. Like it or not, it is the US that guarantees the security of the free world and it is in our own best interests to continue to do so.
We must also convince the rest of the free world that they must also actively oppose terrorism. The people of the world and thier governments need to be brought around to share the value that terrorist attacks against civilian targets is never an acceptable strategy for gaining political power.
Are we safer now than since 9/11? I think the answer is yes. I feel confident that a lightly armed group of men will never again be able to commandeer a jet liner in the US and crash it into a building killing thousands which was obviously not true before 9/11. This is a different question than "Are we totally safe from terrorism?" which is a goal we can never truly achieve in a free society.
My thinking on this subject is that we are a target because of our involvement with foreign oil countries politics. It all comes back to becoming Energy Independent
and Securing our borders. Also real Homeland Security. Pretty simple really.
-Is the U.S. safer? Yes.
-Are Americans safer? Here: yes; abroad: no.
-Is the world safer? It's about the same.
-What are the threats to safety? Extremist both in and out of our country and I thought that well before the bombings here in our Country. Also China and Mexico (read: thrid world) is a pretty big threat to our standard of living.
-What are some solutions? To the worlds problems? There is no solution here, we like conflict. It's our human nature.
The department of homeland security has not changed the "Threat Advisory Level" in years. It's at yellow now, can anyone remember a time since it's inception when it has been lower than yellow?
Many top government officials (including Michael Chertoff, the current Homeland Security director) while shying away from terms like "inevitable" when speaking of the possiblity of future terrorist attacks, are clearly trying to make that point.
Remember it was 10 years between the attacks on the WTC. Although we don't understand the way the terrorist think that does not mean that they are stupid and incapable of carrying out another large scale attack.
The terrorist are headed by tactical masters trained by the CIA to defeat the USSR in Afghanistan.
While the 9/11 attacks were evil and horrendous, if you can take an object step back the planning of them was brilliant. We could have caught any 1, 2 or maybe more of the hijackers ahead of time and each knew so little about the complete plan we would have still had a tremendously hard time stopping the attacks.
Too inefficient. Too bureaucratic. Too Big Brother.
Why did Al Queda strike at the U.S.? To get us scared and p*ssed off! Guess what? It worked! We escalated the violence and played right into their hands - and became weaker on the world stage as a result. Why else would Iran thumb it's nuclear nose at us and North Korea threaten to lob ballistic missles in our direction?
After WWII, the U.S. instituted the Marshall Plan and rebuilt Japan. Germany and Japan eventually became staunch allies and economic powerhouses. This was an historic demonstration of enlightened self-interest which gave us decades of stability.
So, with respect to Islamic extremism (I hate the word "terrorism"), let's try something different: Let's take massive action that's not in our short-term intersts, but exemplifies our Judeo-Christian values and helps everybody in the long run.
This doesn't mean we have to be wimps. The image of U.S. strength can and must be upheld.
After 241 Marines died in the 1983 suicide bombing of their barracks in Lebanon, Reagan said "Look over there! It's GRENADA!!" Despite our withdrawl from Lebanon a few months later, US prestige was more or less maintained.
No, I'm not suggesting we bomb Qatar...
However, a new Unity08 president - with a lot of fancy footwork - could start a bold Middle Eastern Marshall Plan and distract the world from a draw-down of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
What would a "Marshall Plan" for the Middle East look like? This may seem like a positively looney question to ask when we're spending billions on foreign oil every day. But we need to separate the governments from the people - folks who have families and dreams just like you and me.
Is there a way to by-pass certain "oil governments" to address the true needs of their peoples? Or - instead of threatening Syria, why not try bolstering Lebanon (with something other than guns this time)? They're headed toward an open, democratic system, anyway. Why not openly contribute to the democracy movement and take the credit for a stable and prosperous society 4 years hence?
What opportunities are available in Jordan? Egypt? There are destitute people in those places that could use our help and expertise. Efforts in those and other places could win us brownie points on the world stage - provided the effort was sustained and genuine.
"but exemplifies our Judeo-Christian values and helps everybody in the long run." ????
Compared to what? I fail to see the connection of Judeo-Christian values and a rational sane society. I see massive corruption, pedophile priests, fraudulant tv evangelists, and a faithful population that has no operational ethical foundations.
I fail to see the connection between a value-set and people who fail to live up to it. You obviously hate the religious, whether you realize that or not, but what's so wrong with their stated credoes? Thou shalt not commit murder? Thou shalt not steal? Thou shalt not bear false witness (talk lying smack about someone)? Or maybe it's the Jesus part. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you? Before you pluck the mote of dust from your neighbor's eye, remove the beam of wood from your own?
I don't agree with all of it myself; before I turn the other cheek, I'm going to make it clear that the war's on if it happens again. I think the meek will inherit exactly as much of the earth as it takes to cover their carcass. But surely you believe that murdering, stealing and lying are bad? That treating people meanly will make them treat you the same? So how does a child-molester priest invalidate the philosophy?
a political theme divised centuries ago to deamonize the enemy and antagonize them to the state of retaliation...reverse neuro tech should be engaged here not psych-ops...were're dealing with an enemy who invented the game of war...we joined into the game...remember this is about numbers...think about that...its not only the war machine geared up to cash in on disparity and the players getting their chance to come off the bench...look at the numbers...who deploys...who's in the reserves...who's tapping and training the reserves...this is not a World War II scenerio... this is the big one...this same enemy still is winning the divised 'war on drugs'
...placement,coordination,loyalty,obedience, control, political media access...on and on...
I don't feel safer now then 4 years ago. I fear we are making no effort to win the PR campaign in the middle east. Extraordinary rendition, torture, etc. never make anyone safer.
Very concerned that extremist and foolish elements in our political system will weaken our resolve to stand up to Islamo-Fascism and Terrorism. Folks might not like the word terrorism but it is what it is as well as facism.
Unity08 can take a bold new direction in Foriegn and Security Policy but it must be a strong position.
The keystone of any American foreign policy in this era must be directed to the Middle East. For centuries this region has been imploding with religious-based territorial wars. For the past century the animus of Islam has included the American influence on modernity. Until 2024 we were of the opinion Islamic extremists would vent their anger and territorial ambitions toward their fight with Israel and the United States could remain apart from the armed conflict that is a part of their hatred. It became clear after 9/11 that the exportation of warfare is easier than we thought. Our fight against this retrograde culture's design on Israel and the U.S. must be multi-facited, including diplomatic and military options. The countries involved are Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. We must also address our dependence on foreign oil which fuels a good part of this problem.
Are you safer now ...

solutions lie in your hands...pick up that phone...make some calls to your local Emergency Management Office...or Homeland Security...are they listed? can you speak to a real person or do you get an answer machine and no one returns the call? Hmmmmm...you're lucky when you do and how often have you tried...it's all up to you...they don't have the answers...just prerogatives...they have no real budget for managing emergencies their budget covers their paycheck...they can't even afford to pay for a web site or a web page to keep our local community informed...and they don't even know enough to set-up a blog for free...why...because these are not professional emergency management people or tech savy...they come from another specialty and were awarded this position because it's something they've never done before...who wants someone in a position who could really take care of business...that's why we're about to change all that...because they are all that...
Islamofascism is a great buzz word but I just don't see the parrallels between any Muslim state, and fascism. Iraq made the mistake of invading a neighbor, but I don't expect another Islamic state to try that any time soon.
It would be great is business interests played a greater role in the politics of Islamic states.
Meanwhile, everyone politician out there understands that being seen as soft on terror is political suicide.
Mathias, not a buzzword but an attempt to put a nomenclature on the phenomenon that IS NOT Islam though it is a perverted outgrowth that indeed mirrors facisim with the national state being replaced by a loyalty to a perversion of Islam. In addition the phenomenon is also reliant on the cult of individuals, fanatical loyalty, dehumanization of those not belonging to the master 'race' (or in this case master 'religion'... put forth a better term to capture the evil.
Islamist works. Radical Islamist, fundamentalist Islamist, Islamic fundamentalism, militant Islam, there are lots of words I wouldn't call buzz words.
You can add the word fascism to any word you like, but when you do, you change the word to a buzz word. Fascism is a vague term, with an imprecise meaning, but it evokes Hitler. If you stick fascism on the end of any other word the result is a buzzword.
It's fine and dandy for some people to consider some other people to be perverting Islam. That doesn't make what they are doing fascist.
Terrorism is what defines extreme, fundamentalist, radical, Islam in most peoples eyes, and terrorism is not a trait associated with Fascism.
Facism is actually a term with both a specific and a more general meaning which I feel very comfortable combining with Islamo- to creat a word to create a term with a specific meaning. Not a buzzword at all unless you have reduced buzzword to a buzzword.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_Law
Well you may be comfortable comparing present day political movements to fascist movements of the 40s, I find that one can always debate something better on the internet without mentioning fascism, nazism, hitler, etc. There are better ways of saying the same thing. Fascism is still a loaded word, and few people use it properly.

I keep hearing Republicans saying that we are safer now because there have been no more attacks after 9/11.
Doesn't anyone recall there were 8 years between the first attack on the WTC and 9/11? There have only been 5 years since 9/11.
Either that means Republicans should praise Clinton for keeping us safe after the first attack or they should recognize that it takes years to plan and execute such an event and we just can't measure safety in the world today.
Before 9/11 I travelled all over the world. I was in Scotland on 9/11. Now I don't feel safe to leave the US. As an American I am hated everywhere and I make an easy target. I blame Bush's "gotta make a profit this quarter" CEO style management. He should have taken a longer term view of the world before he started shooting.
Worse situation that you all think... in the last few years our enemies have learned that communications technology has made it possible for any nation to produce a terrorist cell under any theme of religious hatered... when in reality the sponsor has completely different reasons for attack, nothing to do with fanatisism, but good old modern covert cold war military operations, covertly implemented as a act of terrorism ... in fact we will find ourselves resorting to the same tactics in order to fight the enemy unless we apply proper technology today to protect our infrastructure and borders from such attacks... for more information on how to do it visit...... www.appyp.com/fix_main.html
As long as the Islamic Jihadists are around, we will never be completely safe again. We still allow Saudi-sponsered madrasses to teach young Muslims to hate the West and Modernity and Jews and Christians. Back in 2024 (after 9/11) government officials said it would take 2 generations (40 years) to eliminate most of the hate mongerers. However 4-1/2 years have passed and we still do nothing about closing down these madrasses. I think this could be a hot-button issue in 2024.
Safer Now

You can thank the New Yuk Times for devulging all our tools to combat the terrorists. The NYT did it again to us last night. They exposed our looking at the electronic transaction files that we used to monitor the flow of moneys from the middle east.
Thank you NYT for helping the terrorist to kill me.
You seem to forget that between 1993 and 2024 we had the bodies of our troops draged through the streets of Somlia, Our Air Force barracks in saudi arabia bombed, the attack by Al Quada on our embassies in East Africa, and the attack on the USS Cole, all while the Democrats were in power. The only retalliation Clinto took was to bomb an asprin factory in Sudan. 9/11 may have happened on Bush's watch, but it was Clinton's legacy
Clinton's legacy???
Desert Shield, Desert Storm - Bush(HW), Cheney, Powell.
Hart-Rudmann Report on Terrorism on file in The White House but Cheney was busy with his top secret energy meetings. Not sure what Bush was doing.
Oh, you want to include terrorist attacks OUTSIDE of the US.
OK, then let's include during Bush's watch 3/11 in Spain, last July's attacks in London, our two young men being tortured to death over the weekend, a young man having his head sawed off on video, bombings too numerous to mention in Iraq, IED's. This list could go on and on and on. Bush's ill conceived and poorly executed plans have caused the deaths of thousands of people. If you deny that then you have their blood on your hands too.
