I see the phrase "Unity 08 party" used in this rule. My understanding is that Unity 08 is not a political party and does not intend to be one. Becoming a party would require fundamental changes to Unity 08's setup, and organizing groups in each state would have to be formed. This is not what any of us signed up for.
I see that Unity 08 is running up against the reality that it cannot "nominate" a ticket unless it is a party. Also, under current laws, which vary from state to state, it may be impossible to have a mixed-party ticket on the ballot in all states. I myself have no idea how many states in which it might be possible to do this.
The alternative to me seems to be that Unity 08 endorses a set of candidates who agree to either run as Independent, or for the VP candidate to switch parties, or for both to switch to a 3rd party that is willing to carry the Unity 08 ticket. The latter two options are likely to cause dissension among Unity 08 delegates and probably won't be acceptable (also getting a 3rd party to take the Unity 08 nomination at the last minute is not likely as they have their conventions and candidates who campaign for a year or longer to get their nominations too).

Actually, if we are serious about winning we must become a party because we must appoint electors.
