"Patriot Act"

  • There's a misnomer, if there ever was one.

I watched CSPAN, and Napolitano, a former Judge, gave an excellent talk about how some of our basic, constitutional rights have been ripped away by Bush. He's written a book, "Nation of Sheep" so named because he feels we are like sheep in not speaking up. His talk convinced me things are far worse than I had known. We are nearly back to pre-Magna Charta days.

Your phone calls, your mail, your email, medical records, financial records - anything they want - is now available with a self-written warrant with no judicial review and without your knowledge. There is no need for just cause, you do not have to be told of charges, you can be imprisoned without recourse indefinitely.

He explained how the Patriot act was done - 300 some pages - it modifies the volumes of the existing Judicial code. It says things like, "On page 54 of Volume 9, replace 'shall' with 'shall not'". So, to decipher it, you have to have the volumes of the Justice code before you, but what it does is strip away your rights to privacy, probable cause, confront your accuser,....

He said only 2 senators claimed to have read it - both voted against, and 1 of them is now dead. (Kucinich would make three, he says he read it and voted against).

That this isn't the old Soviet Union or Nazi Germany is hard to accept.
    Very troubling.
