Coal---America is the Saudi Arabia of coal. Electric prices here in Western PA are among the lowest in the nation because of the abundence of coal. Pollution concerns were addressed in the mid 70's. America should be building more coal-powered power plants.
Bio-diesel---The cost of converting waste vegetable oil into diesel fuel is roughly half the cost of petroleum based diesel fuel. Farmers and trucking need to form co-ops to produce their own bio-diesel (the process is simple) and should be given grants and tax incentives to do so.
I also see many people here have swalloed the Big Oil cannard that ethonal production from corn requires more energy than it produces. The arguement nelects the fact corn can be converted to ethonol via RENEWABLE energy sources (ever heard of a "still"???).
Also, someone mentioned rising food prices. That is more an affect of the higher fuel costs to produce and transport food. The price of corn itself has risen very little in the last year (although wheat has gone up a few denari)
