The balanced budget of the late ‘90s has been replaced with sizable deficits growing out of the Iraq war and other programs. Alan Greenspan and others have warned of the coming challenge of the entitlements for Medicare when the baby-boomer generation soon reaches retirement age. Some wonder whether the across-the-board tax cuts passed before 9/11 should be pursued in a time of war.

Budget deficits are back for as far as the eye can see. This alone is a very serious development. Of more concern, however, is that politicians in Washington are not even working on a plan to bring the deficit under control. Instead, they have indiscriminately cut taxes, increased spending.
