An American Disgrace

In a way it was depressing to see our President make such a fool out of himself on TV the other night. He was literally BEGGING for someone, anyone, to believe him and to support his further insane adventures in Iraq. He is incapable of recognizing the total foul up his administration has foisted on the American people and is trying desperately to salvage some sort of legacy, other than as a total failure, for his presidency. The one legacy he is most likely to leave is one of abject failure and as the single PERSON that enabled the Democrats to come to power. The new congress is now working overtime to thwart anything the President and the Republicans might want to do. I hope our elected representatives, both Democrat and Republican, will do the honorable thing and impeach George W. Bush. This could start a healing process that the country badly needs.

Whether one is FOR or AGAINST the war in Iraq I believe that most people would admit that little to nothing has gone right there and that the things that have gone wrong are due, primarily, to the actions of George Bush. Billions of dollars wasted, tens of thousands of lives (both American and Iraqi)lost, a decrease in the international community's view of America as a world leader, and a debt build-up that will cost our decendents for decades to come.

Look, why hash over the past, why even worry about Clinton or Bush or their many many hacks? They are no longer relevant. Change is upon us, lets embrace it.

Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Unless of course you simply re-write it.

I agree that HISTORY does teach us a lot but I disagree that very many HISTORIANS can teach us much at all. Historians are like anybody else, they have a habit of putting their own spin on what transpired in the past and of interpreting it to suit their predetermined ideas. I have known a LOT of historians over the years and have had many interesting conversations with them. But, I have found that, just like the rest of us, they have a very bad habit of reading what they want to read into what has occurred and to let their biased opinions drive their better judgement. This is not meant to be a direct criticism of anybody in particular but it is meant to give everybody a heads up. Don't ever think that Historians, or Libriarians, or Psychologists, or etc..... have any more common sense than anyone else and don't ever assume that any of these professionals speak nothing but the FACTS when interpreting the past or assuming that their interpretation fortells the future. They, like most of the rest of us have a hard enough time undersanding the present. Forecast the future? Just ain't so.

Darryel on February 4, 2024 - 4:57pm

Yes, Clinton did perjure himself before Congress. But this is where we, the voters, have to exercise a little common sense. Clinton's actions did not harm anyone except himself. His actions with Monica and his denial befoe congress were no more than the attempts of a man caught with his hand in the cookie jar to protect himself. Yes, it was stupid (both the activity and the denial) but it is no more than MILLIONS of men have done MILLIONS of times every day in this country. We all (or at least MOST of us) have been guilty of speeding on the Interstate but when we get a ticket and go to court, many of us will deny it before the traffic judge. We usually have to pay a fine anyway and our denials rarely hurt anyone else.

However, in the case of Nixon, his lies and Perjury DID hurt the country. It appears that if he had NOT lied and tried to cover up his lies and crimes he would NOT have been re-elected. Now this might not seem like a big deal to you but it is to me. As president he did nearly as much harm to the United States as George Bush has done. Nixon tried to control the activities of the FBI, the CIA, and other agencies charged with many aspects of the security of us all. Bush as done the same and the results are painfully obvious to most of us. BILLIONS of dollars spent under false pretenses, THOUSANDS of Ameican lives and TENS of thousands of Iraqi lives lost, a loss of honor and trust of the United States around the world, a major attack on our freedoms, and the list goes on.

Yes, there IS a difference between what Clinton did and what Bush has done. And, never forget, Clinton WAS impeached by the House. He was not, however, convicted by the Senate.

Quicksilver on February 7, 2024 - 8:01pm

I agree, and glad you bring up Nixon, who was the previous low before the Bushes.
While on the subject - what about Bush Sr. and selling arms to Iran while they had our embassy hostage? He denied, denied, it finally was proven he had been involved, he admitted it, AND NOTHING HAPPENED!
As to the current Bush - right before the election "Rumsfeld will stay" - days before Rumsfeld was ousted. A direct lie to the American people.
The bigger lie(s) of course, are that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11, was any threat to us, had WMDs, that Iraq was about anything but Iraqi oil.
AND -
What about the chicken-hawk Cheney? Anyone following the Scooter Libby trial? If Cheney were to testify, they ought to have a lie-detector hooked to him - clear an oath won't matter to him.

Finally to Clinton - anyone shocked that Clinton (EITHER OF THEM) would lie doesn't watch them in action, but Clinton's lies, other than being an embarrassment to our country, pales compared to lies to get in a war, abet our enemies, undermine our constitution,.....

reino on February 5, 2024 - 3:20pm

Clinton never testified under oath before Congress, therefore he never perjured himself before Congress. As best I remember, he never addressed the Lewinsky matter to Congress.

Darryel on February 8, 2024 - 4:58pm

Please, pray tell us just exactly what he was impeached FOR! What law did he break? Or, was it just a lynch mob? What were his offenses that warranted impeachment? Certainly not his hanky panky in the White House.

mgrant7913 on February 8, 2024 - 5:21pm

Clinton was brought for impeachment because the Republican party was desperate to assert its "moral authority" over everyone. So funny how the standards are so different. To Republicans Pres. Clinton defiled the bonds of marriage which to them is important. Yet Bush has gotten thousands of people killed and for what? Yet no one talks of impeachment. How does the worst President this nation has ever laid eyes on get to stay in office for 8 years? Im baffled.

Quicksilver on February 8, 2024 - 7:58pm

I talk of impeachment- but it has to be both Cheney (who I don't think could pass a sanity hearing) as well as George for their lies getting us into Iraq. I don't know what could be more criminal.
We need to stop them - they are now provoking Iran into a confrontation...
Wonder why we let Afghanistan go back to the Taliban and even tho N Korea has the bomb and is nuttier than a fruitcake we hear more about Iran? Afghanistan and N Korea aren't sitting on oil.

KrisW on February 8, 2024 - 8:09pm

Trying to get Pelosi the presidency now, are you?

If Bush and Cheney ARE impeached, these quotes better be used....

"It's incontestable that the day I left office there were unaccounted for stocks of chemical and biological weapons"...Bill Clinton, CNN, July , 2024

"Saddam was been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process"..... Nancy Pelosi, July 2024

"He (Saddam) will will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983"....Sandy Berger, Clinton Security Advisor

BTW...why isn't Sandy Berger being prosecued for theft of documents?

http://journals.aol.com/kweinschen/Veritas/

reino on February 10, 2024 - 10:16pm

Berger pled guilty, paid a fine, performed community service, and is on parole. In other words, he already was prosecuted.

And if he hadn't been a "privalaged member" of the Clinton administartion, he'd be in jail.

Like he should be.

http://journals.aol.com/kweinschen/Veritas/

Quicksilver on February 10, 2024 - 8:56pm

Pelosi would be better than what we have.
"unaccounted for stocks" just means that - doesn't mean they weren't used up against the Kurds or Iranians, just means "unaccounted for", like the $12 Billion in cash Bremer "lost" in Iraq - it's "unaccounted for".
Bush, Cheney, Rice - all played the "mushroom cloud" card, which was know to be bogus.

KrisW on February 10, 2024 - 9:28pm

Gee, Quicksilver, why don't you nominate her then?

I'll NEVER be voting for her or Hillary.

Tammy Bruce or Anne Coulter, maybe.

That is one of the best ones I have heard, Clinton's perjury should be judged with a little common sense. Whatever happened to we are all equal in the eyes of the law. It amazes me how people will defend that snake, one of the sleezeist who ever served in the White House. Sure Nixon was guilty and he paid a price. Slick Willie was guilty but we need to view his crime as one of those good ole boys situations and forget the law. You were right about both Nixon and Bush but you are so very wrong about the biggest womanizer who ever inhabited the White House, no I take that back it would be a tossup between him and JFK.

I agree 100% that Clinton was a sleeze ball. Now, let's just consider what you said. I really do not care that much about a person's personal sexual habits as long as they do not hurt anyone else. Clinton was/is a womanizer but he WAS an effective president. There can be no comarison between him and Nixon-Bush I-kBush II-Reagan_Carter_ or Johnson. We had a budget surplus when Clinton left office. We were at the most peaceful period in the past 60 years when he left office. Our economy prospered more under Clinton than under any other president since FDR. On and on I could go. But, some people cannot get past the fact that Clinton got a BJ in the White House. And, judging from his popularity since leaving office, very few Americans really give a squat.

Nuff said on this topic, at least for me. I am more interested in what happens in the 08 elections and for the next 4-8 years follwing that. Serious stuff on the horizon.

Clinton's Presidency on the home front (except for bringing discredit to the Office itself) was a good one, however, it like a number of Administrations before it, failed miserably in the area foreign policy viz a viz intelligence on the ground in the Middle East.

President's should start relying more on Historians for advice than, political arse kissers and lobbyists, their place in History will gain considerably.

Those that Bash Bush - are showing their ignorance of what's been going on the World since the end of WW2, the fact is - we've been blessed with Cadre of Politicians in many Administrations In And Since WW2 : That Were Just Not Equipped To Run A Country With A Constitution & System Designed To Grow & Prosper !!

Face it Darryel - IF WE THE PEOPLE DON'T FIX IT - IT AIN'T GOING TO GET FIXED !!

I think Clinton as well as the Republicans (Reagan, Bush 1, Newt, Bush 2) all kicked the collective can down the road and gimmicked-over the two key nation-buster problems that threaten the life of the republic - Entitlements and Grand Strategy. Thus in my estimation although they did some good stuff (due to Splitski Government mostly), they were both/all in the final analysis failed administrations. But that is water over the dam and we need to get the collective corn-cobs out of our behinds and stop the blame game can kicking polemical clap trap and forthrightly start to address the big mega-issues bearing down on us.

If 9/11 did anything else it showed how strategically unprepared we were to confront the extant threats to our security. Still in the Cold War mode fighting the last war Grand Strategy-wise we totally missed the assymetric threat from the ethnic-tribal-religion failed states and nonstate actors. We all thought we could do Al Qaeda, Afganistan, Iraq, and GWOT on the cheap and based on an emotion filled seat of the pants policy devoid of any coherent strategic context. The ends-means disconnect on the resulting policy was/is sadly breathtaking. Both parties are guilty of this since the late 80s but we are all in the same leaky boat if not addressed/resolved now.

By the same token the Entitlement Reform Question "ends-means" disconnect continues to expand and not be addressed in any meanigful way. It gets worse and will be harder to solve the longer we put off. Gimmickry (drawing from the Social security trust fund, etc) there in borders on the criminal intergenerationally speaking. We will have our Entitlement 9/11 in a few years folks we we keep can-kicking that one!

9/11 and our incompetent the susequent knee-jerk GWOT ends-means disconnect reaction showed how truly exposed we were/are. On both Grand Strategy and Entitlement questions we might have been able to get away with this can-kicking but with the international threats that exist out there and the Baby Boom retirement Tsunami heading our way in the next 5 years our days are numbered if we don't address/reslove in the next 5 to 10 years! Our choice! Do we wring our hands and engage in water-over-the-dam bickering and opportunities lost with politicains past. Or do we start to have the courage and citizenry responsibility to forthrightly examine and address in a bipartisan/nonpartisan way these big Nation-Buster mega issues. You all choose!

Being a former history teacher, I appreciate your comment on the fact President's should rely on historians more in their administration. One thing many overlook in the so called budget surplus of the Clinton years was the accounting gimmickry used by the national government and it is still used today. They show social security funds as being part of the equation, they should not be, but tell that to a politican wanting people to think they balance the budget. And another point no President ever balances a budget, its the Congress that controls spending not the President. Good points. Have a good day.

It seems pretty obvious that Bush is in a LOT of trouble. It appears more and more likely that the new Congress will either cut off funds or specify exactly what any new funds can be used for. In either case it pretty well takes Bush out of the picture.

This action will have no constitutional effect on the President's role as Commander In Chief. The only real effect will be to cause him to compromise a little more with the Democrats in order to get anything done at all. And this, I believe, is a good thing. Although I have some misgivings about this seeming incrusion on the President's commander in chief role, Bush has brought it on himself and every future president. He has skirted, if not outright violated, the constitution many times and, in the process, weakened the office of the President greatly. I feel sure that HISTORY will show him to be the absolute worst president in our entire history. This is saying a lot in view of Richard Nixon but I firmly believe it. With some 70% of the American people strongly opposed to any new troop buildup in a war that we are sure to lose, Bush has no hope left. I would personally like to see him forced to resign AT ONCE or to see an impeachment process take place. Keep in mind that impeachment is NOT the same thing as a conviction. I doubt that he would be convicted but I do believe enough votes could be mustered to bring impeachment charges.

MFV an Independent on January 17, 2024 - 7:40pm

I totally disagree with your assessment of Bush,(being impeached, grounds?) Don't say lied to the public, LBJ did that as has other Presidents. By the way do you find it strange the committee that voted impeachment charges against Nixon felt obstruction of justice was a felony, but the US Senate did not think Perjury was a felony in the case of Clinton? Politics sure are strange. Maybe every Congressman and Senator who voted for the war should resign, if they were to do that I say impeach the President and remove him from office.

I believe in giving a person a second chance, provided it does not do more harm than possible good. We have given Bush several "second chances". He was re-elected primarily on the basis of the publics perception that he had a "new" strategy for Iraq. It did not, obviously, work. Our position there is worse now than it has ever been. We have made NO progress at all and, to the contrary, have seen our efforts result in even more violence and hate of the American people in many places around the world. Our "allies" are bailing out at an ever increasing rate and those that remain have such a low committment as to make the term ally almost meaningless.

There comes a time when we must simply lick our wounds and get out. The "elected" government of Iraq has shown NO progress in establishing any type of peace between the warring factions there. To the contrary, the predominately Shia government is obviously and blatently supporting the Shia death squads and the Shia attacks on anything Sunni. With this type of operations we can be assured that nothing we can do will ever make a difference. It is literally impossible to pacify the hate and anamosity that exists between two internal factions such as the Sunnis and Shias. Saddam maintained order ONLY by the continuous violent suppression of the Shias. Now they are playing "payback". The Sunnis will continue to do all that they can to thward ANY progress that the Shia government MIGHT be able to make. We only need to look at Viet Nam for a lesson in what happens when such a situation exists. The South was much more advanced industrially and economically than the North was. The South had, as an ally, the most powerful nation on earth and had the benefit of countless BILLIONS of dollars in military and economic aid. The list of the US mistakes in Viet Nam are well known but, seemingly, ignored by many who would give Bush just "one more chance". I do not believe this will do anything except cost us more American lives and many Billions MORE in dollars that we can ill afford.

The only answer, in my view, is to get out with whatever semblance of honor we can muster.
