Support Senator Dorgan's proposal to establish "import certificates" as a means of balancing US-foreign trade. (Senate bill 3899)

Today, Sen. Lincoln Chaffee proved how blind the Republican Party is. After they spent millions to try and save his seat, he told them to "GTH".

The UN went through seventeen resolutions about Iraq, before Bush decided it was necessary to get read of Saddam. Now, we have Ambassador Bolton trying to get the UN to face facts and worry about the future. Chafee and his fellow Democrats don't want that, not because Bolton does a good job, but because he doesn't kowtow to them.
They will put in another namby-pamby, we'll get seventeen useless resolutions on Iran, and have to invade them.
Congress can just do nothing and we'll be the better for it. Without a strong US representative at the UN, there is little leadership and no teeth in their actions. Mr. Bolton provides strong leadership and is able to follow through. Just the man we need there, whether or not you like him personally.

Are you talking about the new congress beginning in January or the current one which has about 6 weeks to go? Your're too vague on many things. Please take that as constructive criticism

This poll deals with what we want to ask the current, lame-duck Congress to do with their remaining time in Congress. We will be running a poll about our expectations for the new Congress in upcoming days.

First, it is apparent that you have become a full-time entity. Thank you and apologies, as you will be receiving the vitriol of concerned and ignored members for a bit until things settle down.

I note with mixed emotions the observation that a poll that has been up for several days has less than 150 participants. You might want to share this observation with the founders, as it is likely to be explored in the public media where they/we claim to hold some sort of sway?

Whatever plans you have to become meaningful?...might be time to roll them out.

The Republican majority - led by President Bush - is demonstrating exactly why we voted them out in the first place.

Here's an excerpt from an editorial in today's NYTimes.

The House Energy Bill [proposed by Bush to be enacted in this lame duck session] is a broad, mischievous and badly conceived piece of work sponsored by Richard Pombo, Republican of California, that, in a stroke, would lift a long-standing federal moratorium on oil and gas drilling along the entire American coastline. The bill has been vigorously opposed by most state governors from Maine to California.

This kind of drilling can/should be argued on its merits, but doing so under THIS Congress is a clear subversion of democracy.

The moxie of these people is nothing short of unbelievable. Send them packing, NOW!

Trombone Erik: I'll amen that, what a waste of taxpayers money. That would be a good reform to end such sessions after congressional elections whether mid term or after a presidential election.

To the Founders,

Congratulations on picking up the web site traffic in recent weeks. I think your pledge to upgrade the web site, along with some new polls, is attracting attention and buzz.

While Mark correctly points out that a few hundred votes is pretty small (especially on an internet scale), at least it's a start.

And a LOT more people will vote than write a posting on the site. Voting doesn't really take that long, but it's a great "on-ramp" to the movement. Not that many people are comfortable expressing themselves in writing - especially in public! I also think polls are a more valid cross-section of opinion than us die-hard arm-chair policy wonks! ;-) (But I still love reading the stuff in here - I always learn something).

So - I would strongly urge you (yet again!) to make your next poll about the design of this web site. Take the ideas from the shoutbox topic you created, then brainstorm a few more of your own. Then list them and ask us: "Which should we do first?" I guarantee you will drive more traffic to the site. More traffic means more bucks, right?!

You've re-started some momentum here - let's build on it. Maybe you can get 600 votes on the next poll, then 1,200. Things have a way of growing exponentially on the web - IF you're sincere about building a grass roots movement!

It is a new day with new hitech answers rather than looking back our leadership must look forward toward new ideas for resolution regarding issues of the day. Build new modern cities for the exodus of women and children from regions of war... implement video conferencing technology to send the congress home... stop putting luggage under our seats on airliners, rather put the luggage in older planes... and finally implement gps technology at every level to eliminate crime, end child abductions and release the non-violent criminals from prisons... - Earn Snyder

to the Republicans, gay-marriage and flag-burning are crucial issues. you should be a bit more specific.

Those are not "crucial" issuees in the context an economy that can supply the needs of the people, legislation being written and corrupted by special interest, conducting "preventive" wars, etc. These are 'pass-fail' issues for the country as a whole regardless of one's feeling on wedge issues that you have attributed to Republicans.
