Voters in many states, such as California and my own state of Washington have the option to vote on state-wide initiatives.
Proponents say that voter initiatives represent true "grass-roots democracy" and enable sound legislation to get passed that otherwise would NOT have been by the state legislature (e.g. Public Campaign Financing in Maine and Arizona).
Opponents say that Big Money interests have even more influence over initiatives than they do over politicians. They can influence the draft of proposals so they are confusing or just plain bad - then take out TV ads that confuse and misinform the public. Other critics say that the typical voter will not truly study the issues and vote correctly. Why have paid representatives if we all vote for the prettiest blonde a la American Idol?!
