The federal Government has become so huge that it is unmanageable, too costly and is unresponsive to the challenges that face us each day. I see a real need to shrink it to a manageable level by the following actions knowing that this list is only a start and much more needs to be done.

    1. Taxes, repeal the 17th amendment. Let the states get back the power they once had. I am sure that some system could be devised to address the problems with the old system but the 17 amendment caused more problems than it solved. mainly taking the states (who created the federal government and can dissolve or change it) out of the political process in Washington.

    2. repeal the 16th amendment. Let the states finance the federal government like before. One aspect of this would be letting the people hold the states accountable for the way and amount taxed and would make the state governments force the feds to hold down spending.

    3. Abolish the dept of education. State responsibility period.

    4. Enforce the 10th amendment. Billions and billions of taxpayers dollars are wasted each year by the Federal government spending and forcing states and cities to spend money on things that they have no business getting into. When the government says do this or we will cut off funding for that, they are getting around the 10th amendment by extortion. Each state can and will take different approaches to the various problems and each can Tailor their programs and laws to their specific needs and the wishes of their citizens.

    5. Expressively prohibit the Federal Government from meddling in ever aspect of our lives by rescinding the numerous laws and regulations that should have been addressed at the local and state levels such as Marriage, abortion, speed limits, gun control etc. The list goes on and on.

I might not like or agree with each states take on various subjects but it is much easier for the voters in each state to change or modify things they don't agree on that it is to get something changed at the Federal level.
Our government in Washington need to trim down so it can consintrate on matters that only the Federal government can control.

smhiott: I agree with you on number 3, the rest I have to respectfully disagree. By the way for your own future reference you have the 16th and 17th amendments backwards. I also agree in principle with your last paragraph.
    Ain't democracy fun?

Not really, I cannot understand what I said that would lead you to think that I would want any part of "workers who had no rights, minorities who had no vote, women forced to back-alley coat hanger abortions, native Americans driven to near extinction, rural children with no education or prospects or electricity or plumbing."
As far as a "financially comfortable retired white male, eh?" You are partially right, I am white male and I am retired from 20 years in the military, still work to make ends meet because you probably waste more money than my retirement check brings me. Comfortable, yes my 17 year old single wide doesn't leak and it keeps out the wind. What I'm saying is that The state I live in should, with it's own graft and corrupt politicians, has a better idea how it's citizens want to live than some politician in Washington or some fat cat in their leather chair drinking fine wine looking down their noses and trying to decide how someone else should live their life. I will agree that certain standards should be set at the national level but no more than necessary. Besides, if I were a native American when the first white man set foot on this land and knew what I know now, they would look like porcupines with the arrows sticking out of them. Yes we have greatly mistreated the native Americans, African Americans, women and much more but to blame it on the states themselves and leave our Federal Government blameless, come on, get real. What you seem to envision is an all powerful central government with the states being nothing more than a convenient substation to implement it's will. Next step for people with your mindset is a new world order with this country being only regional annex without sovereignty. Like I said before the states created the Federal Government and can abolish it but the it cannot abolish a state so you tell me which is more sovereign.

This is the exact mindset that allows me to proudly call myself a moderate, progressive, hell - even liberal (I'm not)...anything but conservative.

In the modern parlance I have long considered "conservative" to mean the desire to maintain the staus quo, to resist change, etc. In this case, Smhiott, you take it a step further, suggesting that we go back to some imagined utopian past. It wasn't so utopian for workers who had no rights, minorities who had no vote, women forced to back-alley coat hanger abortions, native Americans driven to near extinction, rural children with no education or prospects or electricity or plumbing.

No chance you're a financially comfortable retired white male, eh?

I agree with Bill - there is nothing remotely "unifying" in this proposition...

Nothing in this addresses unity or moderation or practical consequence. If you love the libritarian element of right wing fanatics, join 'em. Maybe if you could settle for a slice of pie instead of all the pies, we would have something to talk about.
